Question - what is the difference between debit card and credit card?

KOMAL SHREE,   January 13th 2018,   RBI Grade B Phase I

Answer -

Debit Card is issued for withdrawal of your own money from you account. For example you maintain a Saving Bank Account in a bank and deposit some amount in that account. Using the debit card you can withdraw the money from ATM or you can make payments using card swipping machines or online payments.

In case of Credit Card you do not keep any deposit with the bank but the bank is providing you a limit (say Rs.1 lakh) upto which you can spend using the card. You have to make the payment of that amount in a specific time period, when the credit card bill is due. You can use Credit Card on swipping machine or for online payments. Some banks allow you to withdraw money form ATM using the credit card.
