Everything to Know About RBI
Founded on April 1, 1935, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was set up in response to the economic challenges India faced after World War I. It started out as a privately owned institution. But in 1949, it was nationalized and became fully owned by the Government of India.
A big shift came in 1969 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, when 14 major commercial banks were nationalized to strengthen the banking system. This was followed by another wave in 1980, when six more banks were nationalized, giving the government more control over the financial sector.
Since then, the RBI has played a central role in maintaining India’s economic stability. For example, in 1973, during the global oil crisis, the RBI introduced tight monetary policies to control rising inflation.
In recent years, the RBI has embraced innovation, especially in financial technology (fintech). A key move was signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) to support growth and cooperation in the fintech space.
The RBI’s core responsibilities, as stated in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, include maintaining monetary stability, managing inflation, issuing currency, holding reserves, and regulating the banking system.
This important role in shaping the economy is why so many aspirants dream of becoming an RBI Grade B Officer. The attraction isn’t just the good salary and perks—it’s also about the pride of working for one of the country’s most respected institutions.
However, reaching this position takes more than just ambition. It calls for consistent effort, smart planning, and strong preparation.
