Career as an Inspector (Examiner)
SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner) is a Group B post under CBEC i.e. Central Board of Excise and Customs. The chances of promotion in this post under SSC CGL exam are very high. After a service period of 3 years, your next promotion will be in the post of Appraiser (Group-B Gazetted). Also you need to qualify the departmental exam, without passing it, you cannot be promoted to the next post. Then with the length of the service you will be promoted to Assistant Commissioner then to Deputy Commissioner and finally to Joint Commissioner. Your last promotion shall be that of a Commissioner. Promotion period also differs from zone to zone since there is a zonal seniority.

SSC CGL exam not only offers you a stable and secured central government job but also offers you a handsome salary. After the 7th Pay Commission, SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner) post comes under 4600-grade pay. The in-hand salary of Inspector (Examiner) is INR 58-60,000 including HRA, DA, and TA. Also you are eligible for allowances and perks like medical (CGHS) expenses, telephone, transport, fuel and other expenses.
Inspector (Examiner) Job Profile
As an SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner), you have two types of posting- one in headquarter and the other in the field. If posted in headquarter you will have to do all the work which an assistant (Assistant Section Officer) in CSS does, i.e. typing letters, writing note sheets, making monthly and other works. If posted in the field you will have to examine the goods to be imported or exported and examine the duty being paid by exporter and importer. After examining the goods, the Examiner needs to prepare lists, check market values of confiscated goods. Also an SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner) has the authority to stop the consignment of goods if there are discrepancies in the documents.
As a SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner) you may be posted in the investigation wing for some time where you have to do work like search seizure and detention. You may also be posted at the Personnel and Establishment Section i.e. HR Department where you need to work on posting, promotions, RTI, Administration related work.
