IBPS Clerk Exam Pattern 2026

IBPS revised the Mains pattern this year. Quantitative Aptitude moved from 35 to 40 questions. Total questions rose from 155 to 160. Time rose from 120 to 125 minutes.

Prelims Pattern

Section Questions Marks Time
English Language 30 30 20 minutes
Numerical Ability 35 35 20 minutes
Reasoning Ability 35 35 20 minutes
Total 100 100 60 minutes

Revised Mains Pattern

Prelims and Mains Difference

Prelims screens candidates, but Mains decides your rank. Therefore, treat Prelims revision as groundwork for Mains.

Feature Prelims Mains
Purpose Screening Final merit
Sections 3 4
Questions 100 160
Marks 100 200
Duration 60 minutes 125 minutes
Awareness section Not included Included
Counts in final merit No Yes
Negative marking 0.25 per wrong answer 0.25 per wrong answer

Focus your energy on high-value topics first. The table below ranks topics by priority.

Subject High Priority Medium Priority
English Reading comprehension, error spotting Para jumbles, vocabulary
Quant Simplification, number series, DI Quadratic equations, data sufficiency
Reasoning Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism Input-output, coding-decoding
Computer MS Office, hardware, networking Shortcuts, internet terms
Awareness Banking, RBI, current affairs Static GK, schemes

Given below are some tips that will help your preparation topic-wise.

English

English carries 40 marks in Mains. Read one editorial daily. Note five new words. Solve one comprehension set every morning.

Revise grammar rules weekly. Practise error spotting and sentence correction in short timed bursts. Additionally, track the question types that cost you marks.

Quantitative Aptitude

Quant now has 40 questions for 50 marks. Master simplification and number series first. They give quick marks. Next, practise data interpretation and arithmetic word problems.

Memorise squares, cubes and percentage fractions. Skip lengthy calculations during the exam. Therefore, you save time for easier questions.

Reasoning and Computer Aptitude

Reasoning offers the highest marks in Mains, at 60 marks. Solve two puzzle sets daily. Practise seating arrangements, syllogisms and inequalities.

Moreover, learn basic computer topics. Study hardware, software, MS Office shortcuts and internet terms. These questions are easy scoring.

General and Financial Awareness

Awareness carries 50 marks and has only 20 minutes. Read daily news and monthly capsules. The current affairs on Beepedia keep your notes fresh and exam-focused.

Focus on RBI policy, banking terms, government schemes and economic news. Revise static GK on weekends.

Sectional Time in IBPS Clerk Mains

Each section has a fixed timer, and you cannot return to a finished section. Therefore, plan your pace before test day.

Section Time Approach
General/Financial Awareness 20 minutes Answer known questions fast and skip doubtful ones
English Language 35 minutes Start with grammar, then finish comprehension
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude 35 minutes Solve easy puzzles first and computer questions quickly
Quantitative Aptitude 35 minutes Begin with simplification and number series

Keep two minutes at the end of each section for a quick review. Leave doubtful questions blank, because each wrong answer costs marks.

Language Proficiency Test

The test checks whether you can read, write, speak and understand your state language. Many candidates ignore it until the last moment. Do not make that mistake.

Read a local newspaper for ten minutes daily. Write short paragraphs about everyday banking topics. Practise common customer phrases aloud. These habits build confidence before the test.

Importance of IBPS Clerk Mock Test, Online Course and Previous Year Papers

Previous papers show real question styles and difficulty. Start with the IBPS Clerk Prelims previous year papers to revise core topics. Then solve the IBPS Clerk Mains previous year papers under sectional timing. Mark every wrong answer and note the reason.

Along with previous year papers, mock tests build speed, accuracy and exam temperament. Regular IBPS Clerk mock tests show your weak topics early. The IBPS Clerk Mains mock tests match the revised 160-question format. Attempt one full mock every week. Spend twice as long analysing it.

Follow a simple loop after every test:

  • Review every question, including the correct ones.
  • Log each error by topic and cause.
  • Retake your weakest section within a week.
  • Track your sectional scores in one sheet.

A structured course removes planning stress. The IBPS Clerk online course pairs guided lessons with practice tests. In addition, it keeps every subject on one clear schedule.

IBPS Clerk Mains Exam Day Preparation

Carry your admit card and a valid photo ID. Reach the centre early. Read every instruction on the screen before you start.

Stay calm if a section feels tough. Attempt easy questions first and return to harder ones within the same section timer. Keep a steady pace until the last minute. Sleep well the night before. Avoid learning new topics on exam eve.

Beginners should not feel overwhelmed. Start with the exam pattern and syllabus. Then build a daily habit of two to three hours.

Start with arithmetic basics, grammar rules and simple puzzles. Add one current affairs session every day. Increase your study hours as your confidence grows.

Period Target
Weeks 1 to 4 Basics in all four subjects
Weeks 5 to 8 Sectional tests and topic practice
Weeks 9 to 12 Full mock tests and revision

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring sectional timers during mock tests.
  • Skipping computer aptitude and awareness.
  • Studying new topics in the final week.
  • Taking mocks without analysing mistakes.
  • Choosing a state without checking language rules.

 Final Takeaway

The IBPS Clerk Mains is close, and every week counts. Follow the phased plan, practise each subject daily and take regular mocks. Consistency beats last-minute cramming every time.

Remember the key facts. Mains has 160 questions, 200 marks and 125 minutes. Final merit uses Mains marks alone. Start today, stay steady and trust your plan.
