SBI PO Exam Pattern 2026

The SBI PO selection process contains three phases. Prelims tests basic aptitude, Mains assesses advanced skills, and Phase III evaluates candidates’ suitability for banking responsibilities.

Candidates should understand the SBI PO exam pattern before creating their timetable. This knowledge helps them allocate study time according to marks, section timings, and examination requirements.

SBI PO Prelims Exam Pattern

The Preliminary examination carries 100 marks and lasts 60 minutes. SBI provides separate timings for each section and does not apply sectional cut-offs in Prelims.

Section Questions Marks Duration
English Language 40 40 20 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude 30 30 20 minutes
Reasoning Ability 30 30 20 minutes
Total 100 100 60 minutes

SBI prepares category-wise merit lists using aggregate Preliminary marks. It shortlists approximately ten times the vacancies in each category for Mains.

SBI PO Mains Exam Pattern

The Main examination includes objective and descriptive tests. The objective paper carries 200 marks, while the descriptive paper carries 30 marks.

Objective section Questions Marks Duration
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude 40 60 50 minutes
Data Analysis and Interpretation 30 60 45 minutes
General Awareness, Economy, and Banking Knowledge 60 60 45 minutes
English Language 40 20 40 minutes
Objective total 170 200 180 minutes
Descriptive paper 3 30 30 minutes
Grand total 173 230 210 minutes

The descriptive paper tests practical communication skills. Candidates must prepare emails, situation analysis, and either report writing or précis writing.

SBI applies negative marking in objective tests. Each incorrect answer attracts a penalty equal to one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question.

Phase III: Psychometric Test, Group Exercises, and Interview

Candidates who clear Mains proceed to Phase III. SBI uses the Psychometric Test to assess personality traits and may share its findings with the interview panel.

Component Maximum marks
Group Exercise 20
Personal Interview 30
Total 50

SBI requires candidates to qualify in both Mains and Phase III separately. It combines the converted Mains score and Group Exercise and interview scores for final merit.

The final merit calculation assigns 75 marks to Mains and 25 marks to Group Exercise and interview. Prelims marks do not contribute to the final selection score.

SBI PO Preparation Strategy: Section-Wise Plan

A strong SBI PO preparation strategy should address every section individually. Candidates should first build conceptual clarity, then increase speed through timed practice.

English Language

English requires consistent practice in comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary. Candidates should read editorials regularly and identify unfamiliar words, sentence structures, and central arguments.

They should practise reading comprehension, error detection, cloze tests, and sentence improvement. Furthermore, daily revision helps candidates remember vocabulary and grammar rules.

Daily target: Complete two reading passages, 20 grammar questions, and 15 vocabulary exercises.

Quantitative Aptitude

Quantitative Aptitude tests numerical ability and calculation speed. Candidates should begin with percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, and interest calculations.

Next, they should practise time and work, speed and distance, mixtures, and data interpretation. Regular calculation drills can reduce solving time during timed tests.

Daily target: Solve 25 arithmetic questions, two data interpretation sets, and 15 simplification questions.

Reasoning Ability

Reasoning preparation should cover puzzles, seating arrangements, inequalities, syllogisms, and coding-decoding. Candidates should master basic concepts before attempting complex question sets.

They should also practise blood relations, direction sense, and logical reasoning. Timed exercises can improve question selection and reduce unnecessary delays.

Daily target: Solve 20 miscellaneous reasoning questions and three puzzle or seating arrangement sets.

Data Analysis and Interpretation

This Mains section carries 60 marks, making it important for overall performance. Candidates should practise tables, charts, caselets, and other data interpretation formats.

They should also revise arithmetic concepts and calculations that support data-based questions. Regular practice helps candidates interpret information accurately and avoid calculation errors.

Daily target: Complete three data interpretation sets and review incorrect calculations.

General Awareness, Economy, and Banking Knowledge

The awareness section carries 60 marks in Mains. Candidates should follow current affairs, RBI announcements, banking developments, economic policies, and financial news.

Additionally, they should revise government schemes, important reports, appointments, and digital banking developments. Short daily notes and weekly revision sessions improve retention.

Daily target: Study current affairs for 45 minutes and revise previously covered topics.

Descriptive Writing

The descriptive paper tests practical writing skills within 30 minutes. Candidates should practise email writing, situation analysis, and report or précis writing.

They should organise ideas clearly and use simple, grammatically correct sentences. Regular typing practice also helps candidates complete answers within the time limit.

Weekly target: Complete three descriptive exercises and review grammar, clarity, and structure.

SBI PO Study Plan 2026

A weekly timetable helps candidates balance Preliminary and Main examination preparation. The following plan offers a practical structure for daily study.

Day Primary focus Additional practice
Monday Quantitative Aptitude English comprehension
Tuesday Reasoning Ability Banking awareness
Wednesday English Language Data interpretation
Thursday Quantitative Aptitude Current affairs
Friday Reasoning Ability Descriptive writing
Saturday Full-length mock test Detailed error analysis
Sunday Sectional tests Weekly revision

Candidates should adjust this schedule according to their current strengths and available study hours. However, they should practise every major subject consistently.

Suggested Daily Study Hours

Activity Time
Quantitative Aptitude 60 minutes
Reasoning Ability 60 minutes
English Language 45 minutes
Banking and current affairs 45 minutes
Mains-specific practice 45 minutes
Revision and error analysis 30 minutes

This timetable requires approximately five hours of focused study each day. Candidates with limited time can shorten individual sessions while maintaining consistency.

SBI PO Mock Test Strategy and Score Targets

Mock tests help candidates assess their preparation under examination conditions. They also reveal weaknesses, timing problems, and recurring mistakes.

Candidates can practise with the free SBI PO Prelims mock tests to improve speed and accuracy. Once they strengthen their fundamentals, the free SBI PO Mains mock tests can help them practise advanced questions and full-length papers.

Suggested SBI PO Prelims Score Targets

SBI does not announce a guaranteed qualifying score before the examination. Actual cut-offs depend on vacancies, candidate performance, and other examination factors.

Therefore, candidates can use these figures as personal practice benchmarks rather than official cut-offs.

Section Maximum marks Suggested practice target
English Language 40 29 to 34
Quantitative Aptitude 30 21 to 25
Reasoning Ability 30 22 to 26
Total 100 72 to 85

Candidates should aim for consistent performance across several mock tests. Since SBI does not apply sectional cut-offs in Prelims, candidates should focus on their aggregate score.

Suggested SBI PO Mains Score Targets

Mains requires balanced preparation across aptitude, awareness, English, and descriptive writing. Candidates can use the following ranges to track their progress.

Section Maximum marks Suggested practice target
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude 60 38 to 46
Data Analysis and Interpretation 60 38 to 46
General Awareness, Economy, and Banking Knowledge 60 38 to 46
English Language 20 13 to 16
Descriptive paper 30 20 to 24
Total 230 147 to 178

These figures represent personal practice goals, not official qualifying marks. Candidates should adjust their targets according to mock performance and examination difficulty.

How to Analyse SBI PO Mock Tests

Attempting mock tests alone will not improve performance. Candidates must review their answers and correct mistakes before attempting another test.

  • Identify questions that consumed excessive time.
  • Review incorrect answers and understand the underlying concepts.
  • Revisit skipped questions to assess their difficulty.
  • Record recurring mistakes in a dedicated notebook.
  • Practise weak topics before attempting another full mock.
  • Compare accuracy, attempted questions, and completion time.

Previous-year papers also help candidates understand question formats and recurring topics. Candidates can practise with SBI PO Prelims previous-year question papers and SBI PO Mains previous-year question papers to strengthen their examination strategy.

How an SBI PO Online Course Can Help

A structured course can help candidates organise their preparation and follow a consistent learning schedule. Guided lessons and practice exercises can also clarify difficult concepts.

Candidates who need structured guidance can explore the ixamBee SBI PO online course alongside independent study. They should select learning resources that suit their current preparation level and specific weaknesses.

However, candidates should continue revising independently and analysing their mock tests. Regular practice remains essential throughout the preparation process.

SBI PO Salary and Career Prospects

The SBI PO notification specifies an attractive salary structure and several employment benefits.

Salary component Details
Starting basic pay ₹48,480
Advance increments Four
Basic pay scale ₹48,480 to ₹85,920
Approximate initial CTC at Mumbai ₹21.97 lakh annually
Additional benefits DA, HRA, CCA, NPS, medical facilities, and lease rental benefits

Actual compensation depends on applicable allowances, location, and bank rules. Candidates should also review the notification’s service bond and employment conditions before accepting an offer.

Final Preparation Checklist

Candidates should follow a structured routine and track their progress throughout preparation.

  • Review the latest notification and eligibility requirements.
  • Complete the syllabus for Prelims and Mains.
  • Practise each section under timed conditions.
  • Attempt regular full-length and sectional mock tests.
  • Solve previous-year papers and review mistakes.
  • Revise current affairs and banking awareness daily.
  • Practise descriptive writing every week.
  • Monitor official SBI announcements and call letters.

Conclusion

The SBI PO Preparation Strategy 2026 should combine conceptual learning, timed practice, and regular revision. Candidates must understand the latest notification and follow the prescribed examination requirements.

Moreover, mock tests and previous-year papers help aspirants assess their readiness and identify weak areas. A structured online course can provide additional guidance throughout preparation.

Candidates should set realistic score targets and review their progress consistently. With focused preparation and careful analysis, they can approach the SBI PO selection process with greater confidence.
