SSC Recruitment is one of the most awaited notifications and all the job aspirants willing to work in the government sector wait for it. It conducts various examinations among which SSC MTS and SSC CHSL are two of the important examinations. Both the examinations are conducted to recruit candidates in various government offices but they have certain differences with respect to the job profiles, required educational qualifications, and other parameters. SSC MTS vs SSC CHSL: Eligibility Criteria

SSC MTS and SSC CHSL are two different types of examinations and therefore the eligibility required to apply for the posts will also be different. In order to start the application process for any exam, it is extremely necessary to ensure that you are eligible and possess the minimum educational qualification required to apply for the post.

Educational Qualification Must have passed 10th Standard or an equivalent examination from a recognized board or university. Must have passed 12th Standard or an equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.
Age Criteria Candidate should not be less than 18 years and not more than 25 years. Candidate should not be less than 18 years and not more than 27 years.

SSC MTS vs SSC CHSL: Exam Pattern

SSC MTS and SSC CHSL being two different examinations and for different job posts, the testing pattern also contains few differences. You should be well aware of the differences between the exam patterns of SSC MTS and SSC CHSL so that you can choose and prepare in a better way.

Conducted in two stages: Paper I (CBT: Computer Based Test) and Paper II (PBT: Paper Based Test) Conducted in three stages: Tier I, Tier II and Tier III.
SSC MTS Paper I is conducted online with multiple choice questions and Paper II is conducted in offline mode (pen & paper mode). Tier I of SSC CHSL exam is an online objective (multiple choice) test.
Paper I consists of 4 tests – Intelligence Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, English & General Knowledge. Tier I contains 4 subjects- General Awareness, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude & English Comprehension.
Paper II of SSC MTS consists of descriptive English paper where you are required to write an essay/letter. Tier II consists of  a descriptive paper to test the written skills of the candidates in English/Hindi. The Paper would comprise an ‘Essay’ writing of 200-250 words and Letter/Application writing of approximately 150-200 words.
Paper III of SSC MTS is a Skill Test which is held as per candidate’s convenience. Tier III of SSC CHSL Exam comprises of certain skill tests which are required for selected government posts.

*There is also a typing test for some jobs.

Paper I will consist of a negative marking of 0.25 marks. Paper I will consist of a negative marking of 0.50 marks.

SSC MTS vs SSC CHSL: Job Posts

  • The SSC MTS examination is usually held to recruit eligible candidates as multi-tasking staff in various government departments and ministries. It was initially a group ‘C’ job but later the group ‘D’ jobs were also combined with group ‘C’ and since then the job title is named as MTS – Multi Tasking Staff.
  • Whereas SSC CHSL examination is generally held for the Group C and clerical posts, and thus the qualification as 12th pass.

SSC MTS – There are various kinds of tasks and responsibilities performed under SSC MTS as there are a number of job posts that come under this category of Multi Tasking Staff. Thus, depending on the job there will be multiple types of jobs under this post.

  • A candidate selected under MTS will have to maintain the files/records, look after the overall maintenance of the section he/she is working in, delivering of posts, cleanliness of the section and surrounding area too, handling work related to the educational qualifications.
  • As this is also a central government job, therefore the benefits can be expected to be the same as any other central government employee.
  • A candidate under MTS job is eligible for promotion as per the central government rules. The first promotion is offered after 3 years of service, second promotion after another 3 years and the third promotion is offered after 5 years of service which may go on in a similar pattern.

SSC CHSL-  Being group ‘C’ posts, the jobs under CHSL are mostly clerical level jobs. Two main jobs under SSC CHSL are LDC (Lower-Divisional CLerk) & DEO (Data Entry Operator). Both the jobs offer comfortable working condition and if you stick to the job, you may be promoted to higher post as well.

  • As a DEO, you will be responsible for maintaining documents and updating, creating & entering all the relevant and important data in the computer database.
  • You need to write letters and do chores at the office in the absence of LDCs.
  • DEOs scan all the pertinent information, figures and data of the department thoroughly and compile them together to stack and make a proper database for future reference.
  • An LDC is responsible for clerical work, which includes documentation and co-ordination with the seniors. You are expected to undertake the official responsibilities smoothly and efficiently for the day to day operations in the office.
  • There are promotion opportunities in both these jobs as well, depending on the departments.

SSC MTS vs SSC CHSL: Salary

SSC MTS: MTS is a combination of Group ‘C’ and group ‘D’ jobs and thus the candidates under MTS are entitled to receive a salary under the pay band- 1 (rs 5200-20200) + Grade Pay of Rs 1800. Therefore, the salary of an MTS may range somewhere between Rs 18,000 – Rs 22,000 (approx.) per month. The final salary may also vary depending on the post and job location.

SSC CHSL: The two major posts under SSC CHSL are LDC and DEO as discussed above. The  in-hand salary of both the posts will be:

Lower Division Clerk – 18,777 – 22,411

Data Entry Operator –   25,165 – 31,045
