Staff Selection Commission or as popularly called SSC is an organization under the Government of India that conducts various examinations every year to recruit eligible candidates for various posts in the ministries and departments of the Government of India and in subordinate offices. SSC conducts various examinations and a huge number of job aspirants apply for these jobs. Two of these numerous and popular examinations are SSC CGL & SSC MTS. Most of the job aspirants are well aware of the SSC CGL Exam as it is the most popular and sought after jobs in the government sector. SSC MTS is also a national level examination which gives a chance to serve in various departments / offices/ ministries in the central government. There may be times when you may have to choose between two of these but are not able to make a fair choice due to lack of information or some other possible reasons. SSC CGL vs SSC MTS: Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility can be counted among the most important points as this is the major point which would actually decide if you will apply for any particular examination or not. Thus, it’s good to clarify your doubts related to eligibility required for both SSC CGL & SSC MTS examinations.

Educational Qualification Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized board or university. Must have passed 10th Standard or an equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.
Age Criteria Candidate should not be less than 20 years and not more than 25 years (depending on various posts) Candidate should not be less than 18 years and not more than 25 years.

SSC CGL vs SSC MTS: Job Posts

  • The SSC CGL examination is held to recruit candidates for majorly Group B and Group C posts in the various government departments and ministries.
  • The SSC MTS examination is usually held to recruit eligible candidates as multi-tasking staff in various government departments and ministries. It was initially a group ‘C’ job but later the group ‘D’ jobs were also combined with group ‘C’ and since then the job title is named as MTS – Multi Tasking Staff.

Both SSC CGL & SSC MTS  jobs hold different importance for different candidates. This depends majorly on the eligibility requirements of both the job posts and also the subjects and exam pattern. Both SSC CGL & SSC MTS are held on an all-India level and in various stages as specified below:

SSC CGL Exam Pattern

  • SSC CGL examination is conducted in four stages: Tier I, Tier II, Tier III and Tier IV respectively.
  • Tier I & Tier II are conducted online, whereas Tier III is held in the pen & paper mode. Further Tier IV is a computer skills test held in two steps.
  • Tier I consists of 4 subjects / tests – General Awareness, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude & English Comprehension.
  • Tier II also consists of four subjects / tests – Quantitative Ability, Statistics, General Studies (Finance & Economics) & English Language and Comprehension.
  • Tier III is a descriptive English paper.
  • Negative marking of 0.25 marks is also there in the SSC CGL examination.

SSC MTS Exam Pattern

  • SSC MTS  is conducted in two stages: Paper I (CBT: Computer Based Test) and Paper II (PBT: Paper Based Test)
  • SSC MTS Paper I is conducted online with multiple choice questions and Paper II is conducted in offline mode (pen & paper mode).
  • Paper I consists of 4 tests – Intelligence Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, English & General Knowledge.
  • Paper II of SSC MTS consists of descriptive English paper where you are required to write an essay/letter.
  • Paper I will consist of a negative marking of 0.25 marks whereas Paper II will be qualifying in nature.

SSC CGL vs SSC MTS: Career & Benefits

SSC CGL – It is the gateway to the chance of working under the IAS officers in the central government ministries and departments. Thus it gives you a good chance to build your career along with other advantages that are discussed below:

  • The nature of work also depends on the post you opt for according to your eligibility.
  • If you join early within 2-3 years after your graduation, your promotion prospects would be good. Being at an early age, you can expect to get retired at a higher post.
  • It is a Central Government job, thus can expect good perks and benefits.
  • You are entitled for a pension after you complete your term of service.
  • You may also be eligible for housing facilities and other similar facilities.
  • Job security is one of the reasons for preference of this job.

SSC MTS – There are various kinds of tasks and responsibilities performed under SSC MTS as there are a number of job posts that come under this category of Multi Tasking Staff. Thus, depending on the job there will be multiple types of jobs under this post.

  • A candidate selected under MTS will have to maintain the files/records, look after the overall maintenance of the section he/she is working in, delivering of posts, cleanliness of the section and surrounding area too, handling work related to the educational qualifications.
  • As this is also a central government job, therefore the benefits can be expected to be the same as any other central government employee.
  • A candidate under MTS job is eligible for promotion as per the central government rules. The first promotion is offered after 3 years of service, second promotion after another 3 years and the third promotion is offered after 5 years of service which may go on in a similar pattern.

SSC CGL vs SSC MTS: Salary

SSC CGL: The minimum basic salary under CGL after the 7th Pay Commission is expected to be around Rs 18,000 and the maximum salary may go on to Rs 50,000. There are some recommendations that are still under process and remain to be accepted . The salary scale also varies according to the different posts.

SSC MTS: MTS is a combination of Group ‘C’ and group ‘D’ jobs and thus the candidates under MTS are entitled to receive a salary under the pay band- 1 (rs 5200-20200) + Grade Pay of Rs 1800. Therefore, the salary of an MTS may range somewhere between Rs 18,000 – Rs 22,000 (approx.) per month. The final salary may also vary depending on the post and job location.

Conclusion: SSC CGL or SSC MTS??

Both SSC CGL & SSC MTS jobs are important in their own respect. For the candidates who want to work on a higher level may go for CGL whereas those who want to take it slow and maybe want to go for a job earlier in their life and simultaneously wish to study may go for MTS. The common factor between them is that both are central government jobs, therefore the benefits or allowances may remain the same. Thus, it is up to your personal preference, goals, eligibility and capability that should be the deciding factor while choosing for a job.
