List of Joint Military Exercises of India [2020]

Recently on February 24, 2020, a joint military exercise (EX Indradhanush) was held by the Indian Air force and Royal Air force (United Kingdom). By far, India has conducted a series of military exercises with various countries. These exercises are conducted to strengthen the forces and to understand enemy tactics. Important Joint Military Exercises of India

EX Indradhanush – V 2020 (Air Force)

As the name suggests this was the fifth edition of EX Indradhanush. The first joint exercise was initiated in 2006. The exercise was jointly held by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Royal Air Force (RAF). Royal Air Force is the Air Force of the United Kingdom.

The fifth edition Ex Indradhanush has a focus on ‘Base Defence and Force Protection’. This time the exercise took place with a consideration of the recent threats to military establishments from terror groups or elements.

A total of 78 combatants had participated in the exercise in which the RAF team comprised of 36 specialized combatants of the RAF Regiment and from the IAF 42 combatants were there of the GARUD Force.

Since 2006 IAF and RAF are using this platform to share and jointly validate strategies and tactics to counter terror threats to their installations. In the operation of EX Indradhanush- V both sides exercised with specialized weapons, equipment, and vehicles and also validate joint employability. Special missions also took place to encompass Airfield Seizure, Base Defence and anti-terror operations in Urban built-up zones. Para drops from C-130J aircraft, tactical insertions by Mi-17 V5 helicopters and use of various airborne sensors were the part of the exercise.

AJEYA WARRIOR 2020- Armed forces

On February 18, 2020, there was a joint military exercise conducted between two armed forces of India and the UK. The aim of the exercise was to train troops in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations under both Urban and Semi-Urban areas.

As a part of the exercise important lectures, demonstrations and drills related to counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations were conducted. The exercise was a 72 hours long joint exercise with a focus on counter-terrorism operations.

MILAN 2020

MILAN 2020 is a multilateral naval exercise hosted by the Indian Navy. It was scheduled from March 18 to March 28, 2020, but got postponed due to COVID-19.  This exercise was aimed to enhance professional interaction between friendly foreign navies and to learn from each other’s strengths and best practices in the maritime domain. The theme of the exercise will be ‘Synergy Across the Seas’. Out of the 42 navies that have been invited, over 30 navies have confirmed the participation. China, Pakistan, and Turkey are some of the countries that have been invited for the navel exercise.

The first exercise of MILAN was initiated in 1995 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The participants of the first exercise were Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. The exercise is going to be conducted in Vishakhapatnam, India.

SAMPRITI-IX

SAMPRITI-IX is the joint military exercise between India and Bangladesh. This defense cooperation exercise SAMPRITI 2020 was the ninth edition of the exercise which was hosted alternately by both India and Bangladesh. The first edition of the exercise was conducted in Assam, India (2011).

A Command Post Exercise (CPX) and a Field Training Exercise (FTX) were conducted during the SAMPRITI-IX exercise. In the final validation exercise, troops of both armies jointly practiced a Counter-Terrorist Operation.
