The influence of teachers extends beyond the classroom, well into the future. It is they who shape and enrich the minds of the young, who touch their hearts and souls. It is they who shape a nation’s future.

World Teachers’ Day is a day marked by the United Nations that is observed all over the world on October 5. This day pays homage to teachers all around the world engaged in the noble profession of teaching, be it in academia, sports, languages or an art or craft. It is also known as International Teachers’ Day.

Such topics not only make for an interesting read but also important from your General Awareness point of view. If you are appearing for any competitive exam such as Banking, Railways, SSC and Insurance exams, you are expected to have a well-rounded idea of current affairs.

In today’s article, we will learn all about this very special day, its significance and how we can celebrate it.

World Teachers’ Day History

This day was marked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate the role of our educators and teachers all across the globe. The day was adopted in 1994.

October 5 was selected for this observance because it was on this day that the ILO UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers was adopted formally in 1966.

World Teachers’ Day Importance

As mentioned earlier, this day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. Moreover;

  • It is an opportunity for states and education institutions to reflect upon the working environment of their educators.
  • The day also allows us to appreciate and improve the rights and teaching environments of all teachers.
  • It also acknowledges and celebrates the contribution that teachers and educators make not only in the lives of individuals but also in moulding the society at large.

Read Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel, 1997.

World Teachers’ Day Theme 2021

The International Teachers’ Day Theme 2021 is “Teachers at the heart of education recovery.” This theme was selected in view of the spectacular work done by teachers through the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown to ensure that the education of their students does not suffer.

Online teaching and online studying have become the new normal and our teachers have played a mammoth role in bringing education to our homes.

The World Teachers’ Day Theme 2020 was “Teachers: Leading in crisis, re-imagining the future.”

Teachers’ Day in India

Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated on September 5, every year, exactly one month before World Teachers’ Day. It marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In fact, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan himself expressed a desire to celebrate his birthday as Teachers’ Day in India rather than any other form of homage.

How to Celebrate World Teachers’ Day?

The best way to celebrate World Teachers’ Day is to let your teachers know how much you love and appreciate them. For this, you can send them handmade cards, letters or even emails if you cannot meet them in person.

It would truly mean the world to your teacher if you let them know how they have touched your life. This Teachers’ Day, remember to reconnect with some of your teachers.
