English Language (New Pattern) – Word Usage Questions for SEBI Grade A, NABARD Grade A, and SBI PO

Hi Readers,

Today’s blog is about the English Language- New Pattern (Word Usage) questions. This is in the continuity of the series I have started so that you make the most of this quarantined time. There is one set consists of a total of 10 questions which is expected to be solved in less than 5 minutes. The answers are given at the end so that you first attempt the questions and evaluate your performance after that. These questions will be useful for all the upcoming banking examinations like SEBI Grade A 2020, SBI PO 2020 and IBPS PO 2020, etc.

Directions (1-10): In each of the following questions, a word has been used in sentences in THREE different ways. Choose the option corresponding to the sentences in which the usage of the word is CORRECT or APPROPRIATE.

Q1. AVERSE

Ans.1- (2). Only (ii)

The meaning of the word “averse” is “having a dislike to someone or something”.

Incorrect – Compliance rules can cause an adverse effect (adverse means, harmful or unfavorable) and not averse effect.

Correct – Averse to coffee and averse to tea means some dislike coffee and some dislike tea.

Incorrect – comments can be adverse (adverse means, harmful or unfavorable) and not averse.

Ans.2- (3) Both (i) and (iii)

The meaning of the word “principle” is “morals, values”.

Correct – “as a matter of principle” means as a general rule.

Incorrect – The right version is “School Principal” and not principle.

Correct – “The only principle I live by” is correct as we are talking about the only moral / value I live by.

Ans.3- (1) Only (i)

The meaning of the word “besides” is “apart from”. This should not be confused with “beside” which means “next to”.

Correct – “Besides cancer” is correct as it means – Apart from cancer..

Incorrect – “PM standing besides his Chinese counterpart” is incorrect as the right version is “PM standing beside his Chinese counterpart”

Incorrect – “BBQ grills situated besides the pool” is incorrect as the right version is “BBQ grills situated beside the pool”.

Ans.4- (4) Only (iii)

The meaning of the word “everyday” is an adjective to describe something that is done / that happens on a daily basis. “every day” is a phrase to indicate frequency.

Incorrect – “attends classes everyday” is incorrect as everyday doesn’t describe any other noun. The right version is “attends classes every day”.

Incorrect – “government inspection on certain factories everyday” is incorrect as everyday doesn’t describe any other noun. The right version is “government inspection on certain factories everyday” .

Correct – “launched the best everyday watches” is correct as it means these watches are the kind that can be used on a daily basis.

Ans.5- (5) None of these

The meaning of the word “eminent” is “dignified, respected in a particular field”. Example – eminent personalities are addressing the gathering etc.

Incorrect – “eminent reason” is incorrect and the right word is “significant reason”.

Incorrect – “eminent suspension after his unethical deeds” is incorrect as suspension can’t be dignified, respected. The right version is “imminent suspension after his unethical deeds”. Imminent means about to happen.

Incorrect – “Floods seem eminent” is incorrect as floods can’t be dignified, respected. The right version is “floods seem imminent”. Imminent means about to happen.

Ans.6- (3) Both (ii) and (iii)

The meaning of the word “jubilant” is “feeling of great happiness and triumph”. It is sued to signify a victory.

Incorrect – “..jubilant as it was his birthday” is incorrect as one can’t be jubilant on a birthday where there is no victory. We can say – “..happy / overjoyed as it was his birthday”.

Correct – The fans were jubilant after their team won” is correct as fans are celebrating a victory.

Correct – “The father was jubilant after realizing that his daughter got into IIT.” is correct as the father is celebrating a victory.

Ans.7-(4) Only (iii)

The meaning of the word “indifferent” is “not being interested towards anything – lack of sympathy or attention”. “indifferent” does not mean “not different”.

Incorrect – “Though my son is indifferent from” is incorrect as the intended meaning is “Though my son is not different from..”.

Incorrect – “The current government is indifferent than..” is incorrect as it conveys that  “The current government is not different than..”

Correct – “North Korea is indifferent towards..” is correct as it conveys that North Korea does not care about its neighbours.

Ans.8- (3) Both (ii) and (iii)

The meaning of the word “spiteful” is “full of malice and hate”. It does not mean “inspite of”.

Incorrect – “Spiteful of the fact..” is incorrect as the intended meaning is “Inspite of..”.

Correct – “Managers who make spiteful remarks” is correct as it means “Managers who make hateful remarks..”.

Correct – “The spiteful stare of the opposite party” is correct as it means the stare was full of malice and hatred.

Ans.9- (4) Both (i) and (iii)

The meaning of the word “conspicuous” is “to be clearly visible”.

Correct – “The injury on his leg was conspicuous” is correct as it means the injury on his leg was visible.

Incorrect – “The vehicle of the accused was conspicuous” is incorrect as the other part of the sentence says that the bus was covering it and hence cannot be clearly visible.

Correct – “Mr. Singh is becoming conspicuous on TV” correct as it means the Mr. Singh is becoming visible on TV.

Ans.10- (4) Only (ii)

The meaning of the word “staunch” is “strong support or backing”.

Incorrect – “The underprivileged were staunched” is incorrect and the right version should have been “The underprivileged were dominated etc”.

Correct – “Unai Emery, in staunch defence, has said” is correct as it means “in strong defence”.

Incorrect – “Employment for women still remains staunch” is incorrect as the intended meaning is “Employment for women still remains a stigma.”
