Are You Eligible? Let’s Check the Criteria

Before you apply, it’s crucial to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria as of

August 1, 2025.

Educational Qualifications

  • AAO (Generalist): A Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized university is all you need.
  • AE (Civil/Electrical): You’ll need a B.Tech/B.E. in the respective engineering discipline, along with a minimum of three years of post-qualification work experience in planning and executing multi-storied building projects.
  • AAO (Specialist): Each specialist role has specific requirements:
    • Chartered Accountant: You must have passed the Final Examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and be an Associate Member.
    • Company Secretary: You must be a qualified member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI).

Age Limit

For most posts, the age limit is a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 30 years as of August 1, 2025. However, there are exceptions for some specialist roles:

  • AAO (Chartered Accountant) and AAO (Legal): The maximum age is extended to 32 years.

There are also age relaxations for reserved categories as per government norms: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, and up to 15 years for PwBD candidates.

The Selection Process: Your Roadmap to Success

The selection for all AAO posts follows a three-tiered process:

  1. Preliminary Examination
  2. Main Examination
  3. Interview

The final merit list will be based on the combined scores of the

Main Exam and the Interview. The prelims are only for qualification.

Phase I: Preliminary Examination

This online, objective test is the first step. The pattern varies slightly between the Generalist and Specialist posts:

  • For AAO (Generalist): The exam includes Reasoning Ability (35 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (35 marks), and English Language (30 marks). The English section is qualifying, and its marks won’t be used for ranking. A major plus is that there are no negative marks in this exam!
  • For AAO (Specialist) & AE: The pattern is similar, but there is a negative marking of 1/4th for every wrong answer. For the AAO (Legal) post, the sections are Reasoning, English, and General Awareness.

Phase II: Main Examination

Candidates who clear the prelims will move on to the main exam, which includes both objective and descriptive tests.

  • For AAO (Generalist): This exam consists of an objective test (300 marks) covering Reasoning, GK & Current Affairs, Data Analysis, and Insurance & Financial Market Awareness. There is also a qualifying descriptive English test (25 marks). Again, there is no negative marking.
  • For AAO (Specialist) & AE: The main exam focuses more on professional knowledge. It includes an objective test on Reasoning, General Awareness, and Professional Knowledge, along with a descriptive paper on Professional Knowledge and a qualifying English test.

Phase III: Interview

Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview, which carries 60 marks. You’ll need to secure minimum qualifying marks in the interview to be considered for the final merit list.

An AAO or AE role at LIC comes with an excellent salary and benefits package.
