Question
A can finish a piece of work in 12 days and B can finish
it in 18 days. They work together for 3 days and then B leaves. In how many more days will A alone finish the remaining work?Solution
ATQ, A’s 1-day work = 1/12 B’s 1-day work = 1/18 Together, 1-day work = 1/12 + 1/18 LCM(12, 18) = 36 1/12 = 3/36, 1/18 = 2/36 So, together = 5/36 of work per day Work done in 3 days = 3 × 5/36 = 15/36 = 5/12 Remaining work = 1 − 5/12 = 7/12 Now A alone works. A’s 1-day work = 1/12 Time for 7/12 work = (7/12) ÷ (1/12) = 7 days
