In the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer.

I. y² - 7 y – 18 = 0

II. x² + 10 x + 16 = 0

Solution

I. y² - 7 y – 18 = 0 y² + 2 y - 9 y – 18 = 0 y (y + 2) – 9(y + 2) = 0 (y +2) (y – 9) = 0 ∴ y = - 2, 9 II. x² + 10 x + 16 = 0 x² + 8 x+ 2 x + 16 = 0 x (x + 8) + 2(x + 8) = 0 x = - 8, - 2 Hence, x ≤y
