Let quantity of milk = 2y litres Then quantity of water = 3y litres So, 2y + 3y = 135 5y = 135 y = 27 Milk in the jar = 2 × 27 = 54 litres Water in the jar = 3 × 27 = 81 litres Initial ratio (milk : water) = 54 : 81 = 2 : 3 Out of 45 litres mixture removed: Milk removed = (54/135) × 45 = (2/5) × 45 = 18 litres Water removed = 45 – 18 = 27 litres After removal: Milk = 54 – 18 = 36 litres Water = 81 – 27 = 54 litres Now 9 litres of milk is added: Milk = 36 + 9 = 45 litres Water = 54 litres Required final ratio (water : milk) = 54 : 45 = 6 : 5
