Question
Mixture ‘A’ initially has milk and water in a ratio
of 5:9. After adding 11 liters of milk and 17 liters of water, the new ratio of milk to water becomes 4:7. Determine the initial quantity of water in mixture ‘A’.Solution
Let, the quantity of milk and water in the initial mixture be ‘5x’ litres and ‘9x’ litres respectively.
ATQ,
(5x + 11)/(9x + 17) = 4/7
Or, 35x + 77 = 36x + 68
Or, x = 9
So, quantity of water in the initial mixture ‘A’ = 9 × 9 = 81 litres
