Question
A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio of 5:3
respectively. If 25% of the mixture is taken out and replaced with same amount of milk and 36 ml of water is also added, then the ratio of milk to water in the mixture becomes 7:3. Find the quantity of mixture taken out.Solution
Let quantity of milk and water in the mixture be 5x ml and 3x ml respectively.
Amount of mixture taken out = 0.25 × (5x + 3x) = 2x
According to the question,
(0.75 × 5x + 2x)/(0.75 × 3x + 36) = 7/3
=> (3.75x + 2x)/(2.25x + 36) = 7/3
=> 5.75x/(2.25x + 36) = 7/3
=> 3 × 5.75x = 7 × (2.25x + 36)
=> 17.25x = 15.75x + 252
=> 1.5x = 252
=> x = 168
Amount of mixture taken out = 2 × 168 = 336 ml
