    A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio of 3:1,

    respectively. If 280 ml of mixture is taken out and 90 ml of milk and 70 ml of water is added into the remaining mixture, then the ratio of milk to water in the resultant mixture becomes 5:2. Find the quantity of milk in the mixture initially.
    A 660 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    B 720 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    C 690 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    D 750 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    E 780 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    Let quantity of milk and water in the initial mixture is ‘3x’ ml and ‘x’ ml respectively.
    Quantity of milk in 280 ml of mixture = (3/4) × 280 = 210 ml
    Quantity of water in 280 ml of mixture = 280 – 210 = 70 ml
    According to question;
    (3x – 210 + 90)/(x – 70 + 70) = 5/2
    Or, (3x – 120)/x = 5/2
    Or, 6x – 240 = 5x
    Or, x = 240
    Quantity of milk in initial mixture = 3 × 240 = 720 ml
