Question
A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio of 3:1,
respectively. If 280 ml of mixture is taken out and 90 ml of milk and 70 ml of water is added into the remaining mixture, then the ratio of milk to water in the resultant mixture becomes 5:2. Find the quantity of milk in the mixture initially.Solution
Let quantity of milk and water in the initial mixture is β3xβ ml and βxβ ml respectively.
Quantity of milk in 280 ml of mixture = (3/4) Γ 280 = 210 ml
Quantity of water in 280 ml of mixture = 280 β 210 = 70 ml
According to question;
(3x β 210 + 90)/(x β 70 + 70) = 5/2
Or, (3x β 120)/x = 5/2
Or, 6x β 240 = 5x
Or, x = 240
Quantity of milk in initial mixture = 3 Γ 240 = 720 ml
