Question

    A mixture (alcohol and water) contains 30% alcohol and

    rest 140 litres water. How much alcohol should be added to the mixture to make the ratio of alcohol to water in the mixture 5:4?
    A 130 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    B 115 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    C 135.5 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    D 133 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    E 128.5 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    Initial quantity of alcohol in the mixture = 30 × (0.30/0.70) = 60 litres
    Let the quantity of alcohol added be ‘x’ litres
    According to the question,
    (60 + x)/140 = 5/4
    => x = 175– 60
    => x = 115
    Therefore, quantity of alcohol added = 115 litres
