      Question

      In a vessel, the ratio of milk to water is 3:2. 40

      litres of mixture is taken out and 20 litres of water is added to the remaining mixture so that the quantity of milk in the new mixture is 8 litres more than that of water. Find the initial quantity of the mixture.
      A 120 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      B 180 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      C 100 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      D 140 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
      E None of these Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

      Quantity of milk when 40 litres of mixture is taken out = 3x – 40 Γ— 3/5 = 3x – 24 litres
      Quantity of water when 40 litres of mixture is taken out = 2x – 40 Γ— 2/5 = 2x – 16 litres
      Quantity of water after adding 20 litres = 2x – 16 + 20 = 2x + 4 litres
      ATQ:
      3x – 24 = (2x + 4) + 8
      3x – 24 = 2x + 12
      x = 36
      Initial quantity of mixture = 5x = 180 litres
