    Question

A liquid consists of acid and water in the ratio 5:3. If 20

ml of the mixture is removed and replaced with 10 ml of acid, the new ratio becomes 5:2. Find the initial quantity of the liquid.
A 19 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 60 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 40 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 52 ml Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E None of these Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ,

Let acid and water left after removing 20 ml of the mixture be 5x ml and 3x ml respectively.

    Acid after addition = (5x + 10) ml

    ATQ,

    (5x + 10) / 3x = 5/2

    ⇒ 10x + 20 = 15x

    ⇒ 15x - 10x = 20

    ⇒ 5x = 20

    ⇒ x = 4

    So, initial quantity = 5×4 + 3×4 + 20 = 20 + 12 + 20 = 52 ml
