Question
A liquid consists of acid and water in the ratio 5:3. If 20
ml of the mixture is removed and replaced with 10 ml of acid, the new ratio becomes 5:2. Find the initial quantity of the liquid.Solution
ATQ,
Let acid and water left after removing 20 ml of the mixture be 5x ml and 3x ml respectively.
Acid after addition = (5x + 10) ml
ATQ,
(5x + 10) / 3x = 5/2
⇒ 10x + 20 = 15x
⇒ 15x - 10x = 20
⇒ 5x = 20
⇒ x = 4
So, initial quantity = 5×4 + 3×4 + 20 = 20 + 12 + 20 = 52 ml
