Question
In a mixture, milk and water are in the ratio 2:3. When
10 litres of milk and 6 litres of water are added, the ratio becomes 4:5. Find the initial quantity of the mixture.Solution
Let the initial quantity of milk and water be '2y' and '3y' litres respectively.
So, (2y + 10):(3y + 6) = 4:5
Or, 5 × (2y + 10) = 4 × (3y + 6)
Or, 10y + 50 = 12y + 24
Or, 2y = 26
Or, y = 13
Therefore, required quantity = 2y + 3y = 5y = 5 × 13 = 65 litres
