Question
A jar contains a mixture of mango juice and water in the
ratio of 5:2. 84 litres of the mixture was taken out and 34 litres of water was added to it. If the water was 40% in the resultant mixture, what was the initial quantity of the mixture in the jar?Solution
Mango + Water = 5x + 2x Total = 7x 84 litre of mixture taken out Mango = (5 x)/(7 x)×84 = 60 Mango in mixture = 5x – 60 Water in mixture = 2x/(7 x)×84 = 24 Water = (2x – 24) + 34 = 2x + 10 According to the question (2x + 10)/(5x - 60)=40/60 120 x + 600 = 200x – 2400 80 x = 3000 ∴ x = 37.5 Initial quantity of mixture = 5 x + 2x = 7 x Initial quantity of mixture = 7 (37.5) = 262.5 litres
