Let the initial quantity of milk and water be 'y' and '2y' litres respectively.
So, (y + 1):(2y + 3) = 2:5
Or, 5 × (y + 1) = 2 × (2y + 3)
Or, 5y + 5 = 4y + 6
Or, y = 1
Therefore, required quantity = 3y = 3 × 1 = 3 litres
