Question
A container holds a mixture of
petrol and diesel in the ratio 11:5. If 32 litres of the mixture is removed and replaced with 4 litres of diesel, resulting in a new ratio of 2:1 for petrol to diesel, what is the difference between the final amounts of petrol and diesel in the container?Solution
ATQ, Let the initial quantities of petrol and diesel be 11x litres and 5x litres respectively. Since, 32 litres of mixture contains petrol and diesel in the ratio 11:5 is taken out. So, quantity of petrol taken out = (11x/16x) Γ 32= 22 litres milk And, quantity of diesel taken out = (5x/16x) Γ 32 = 10 litres ATQ, (11x β 22)/(5x β 10 + 4) = 2/1 11x β 22 = 10x β 12 x = 10 litres So, the initial quantities of petrol and diesel are 110 litres and 50 litres respectively. And, the final quantities of petrol and diesel in the mixture are 88 litres and 44 litres respectively. So, the required difference = (88 - 44) = 44 litres
