Question
A train has 9 coaches and an engine. Each coach is 32
metres and the engine is 64 metres. Time taken by the train to cross a platform, whose length is 50% of the length of the train, is 48 seconds. Find the time taken by the train to cross a man travelling in the same direction as the train with a speed of 7 m/s.Solution
Length of train = 9 Γ 32 + 64 = 288 + 64 = 352 metres Length of platform = 0.5 Γ 352 = 176 metres Speed of train = (352 + 176) Γ· 48 = 528 Γ· 48 = 11 m/s Relative speed = 11 β 7 = 4 m/s Time to cross man = 352 Γ· 4 = 88 seconds
