    Question

    (i) 2x² – 9x + 10 = 0 (ii) 4y² – 12y + 9 =

    0 In each of these questions, two equations (i) and (ii) are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answers:
    A if x > y Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    B if x ≥ y Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    C if x = y or no relation can be established between x and y. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    D if y > x Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
    E if y ≥ x Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    (i) 2x² – 9x + 10 = 0 =>2x² – 5x – 4x + 10 = 0 =>x (2x – 5) –2 (2x – 5) = 0 => (x – 2) (2x – 5) = 0 => x = 2, 2.5 (ii) 4y² – 12y + 9 = 0 => 4y² – 6y – 6y + 9 = 0 => 2y (2y – 3) –3(2y – 3) =0 => (2y – 3) (2y – 3) = 0 => y = 3/2, 3/2 Hence, x > y.
