A mixture (oil + kerosene) contains oil and kerosene in

the ratio of 6:5, respectively. If 55 litres of the mixture is replaced with 25 litres of kerosene, then quantity of oil in the final mixture becomes 20 litres more than that of kerosene. Find the initial quantity of the mixture.
A 121 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 165 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 187 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 220 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E None of these Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

Let the quantity of oil and kerosene in the initial mixture be ‘6x’ litres and ‘5x’ litres, respectively Quantity of oil in 55 litres of the mixture
    = 55 × (6/11) = 30 litres Quantity of kerosene in 55 litres of the mixture
    = 55 − 30 = 25 litres According to the question, (6x − 30) = (5x − 25 + 25) + 20 Or, 6x − 5x = 30 + 20 Or, x = 50 Initial quantity of the mixture
    = 11x = 11 × 50 = 550 litres
