Question
A container contains milk and water in the ratio 7:5,
respectively. It also contains 40 litres of sugar solution. If a certain quantity of mixture which contains 14 litres of milk, 10 litres of sugar solution and ‘p’ litres of water is taken out and replaced with ‘a’ litre of water, then the ratio of quantity of milk to that of water becomes 3:4, respectively. Find the value of ‘a’.Solution
Since, ratio of quantity of milk and sugar solution taken out
= 14 : 10 = 7 : 5
So, quantity of milk in initial mixture
= 40 × (7/5) = 56 litres
And, quantity of water in the initial mixture
= (5/7) × 56 = 40 litres
Quantity of milk left = 56 − 14 = 42 litres
Quantity of water left = 40 − 10 = 30 litres
ATQ;
42/(30+a) = 3/4
Or, 30 + a = 56
Or, a = 26
