Question
Mixture βXβ contains 50% alcohol and the rest 40
litres of water. 150 litres of mixture βYβ contains alcohol and water in the ratio 5:10, respectively. Find the resultant ratio of alcohol to water when these two mixtures are mixed.Solution
ATQ, Quantity of alcohol in mixture βXβ = 40 Γ (0.5/0.5) = 40 litres Quantity of alcohol in mixture βYβ = 150 Γ (5/15) = 50 litres Quantity of water in mixture βYβ = 150 β 50 = 100 litres Total quantity of alcohol in resultant mixture = 40 + 50 = 90 litres Total quantity of water in resultant mixture = 40 + 100 = 140 litres Required ratio = 90:140 = 9:14
