A vessel contains mixture of milk and water mixed
in the ratio 8:5, respectively. 52 litres of the mixture is replaced with 45 litres of water such that the quantities of milk and water in the resultant mixture become equal. Find the initial quantity of mixture in the vessel.Solution
Let the initial quantities of milk and water in the vessel be 8x litres and 5x litres
respectively.
52 litres mixture contains 32 litres milk and 20 litres water.
According to question:
8x – 32 = 5x – 20 + 45
3x = 57
x = 19
So the initial quantity of mixture = 13 × 19 = 247 litres
