    9 years ago, ‘D’ was 1.75 times as old as ‘E’. Find the present age of ‘E’.

    Solution

    Let the present age of ‘E’ be ‘x’ years
    Therefore, present age of ‘D’ = 1.45x years
    ATQ;
    (1.45x – 9) = 1.75 × (x – 9)
    Or, 1.45x – 9 = 1.75x – 15.75
    Or, 6.75 = 0.3x
    Or, x = 22.5
    Therefore, present age of ‘E’ = 22.5 years
