    In a family a couple has a son and a daughter. The age

    of the father is four times that of his son and age of her daughter is half of her mother. The wife is twelve years younger to her husband and the sister is eight years older than her brother. What is the age of the father?

    Solution

    Let the age of son be x Father’s age = 4x Wife’s age = 4x– 12 Daughter’s age = x + 8 According to question, Daughter’s age = 1/2 mother’s age (x+ 8) = 1/2 × (4x – 12) 2x + 16 = 4x – 12 2x = 28  x = 14 Father’s age = 4x = 4 × 14 = 56 years Wife’s age = 4x– 12 = 56 – 12 = 44 years Daughter’s age = 14 + 8 = 22 years
