The total of two numbers ‘a’ and ‘b’ is 660. If

‘a’ is reduced by 8% and ‘b’ is increased by 20%, they become equal. Determine the value of ‘b’.
A 300 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 286 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 175 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 255 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

      ATQ,

      a + b = 660 ……(i)

      ATQ,

      0.92 × a = 1.20 × b

      Or, a = (1.20 / 0.92) × b

      So, a = (30b / 23)

Put the value of ‘a’ in equation (i), we get,
      (30b/23) + b = 660

      Or, (53b/23) = 660

      Or, b = 660 × (23/53)

      So, b = 286
