The combined number of apples with John and Paul is 10 more

than the number with George. Also, Paul and George together have 6 more apples than John. If John and George together have 38 apples, how many apples do they have in all?
A 25 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 46 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 65 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 75 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ,

    Let apples with John = x, Paul = y, George = zThen:

    x + y = z + 10 ………(1)

    y + z = x + 6 ………(2)

    x + z = 38 ………(3)

    Add (1), (2), and (3):

    β†’ (x + y) + (y + z) + (x + z) = z + 10 + x + 6 + 38

    β†’ 2x + 2y + 2z = x + z + 54

    β†’ 2(x + y + z) = x + z + 54

    β†’ From (3), x + z = 38

    β†’ 2(x + y + z) = 38 + 54 = 92

    β†’ x + y + z = 46
