A jar contains 180 litres mixture of milk and water, in which the quantity of milk is 25% more than that of water. 36 litres of mixture is removed from the jar and 12 litres of water is then added. Find the final ratio of quantity of water to that of milk in the jar now.

Let quantity of water = 4y litres Then milk = 5y litres So, 4y + 5y = 180 9y = 180 y = 20 Water in the jar = 4 × 20 = 80 litres Milk in the jar = 5 × 20 = 100 litres Out of 36 litres mixture removed: Milk removed = (100/180) × 36 = (5/9) × 36 = 20 litres Water removed = 36 – 20 = 16 litres After removal: Milk = 100 – 20 = 80 litres Water = 80 – 16 = 64 litres Now 12 litres of water is added: Water = 64 + 12 = 76 litres Final quantities: Water = 76 litres Milk = 80 litres Required final ratio (water : milk) = 76 : 80 = 19 : 20
