    Question

A container has 40 litres of a mixture of milk and water

in the ratio 3 : 1. How many litres of pure water must be added so that the new ratio of milk to water becomes 3 : 2?
A 15 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 23 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 10 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 5 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    Total mixture = 40 L, ratio milk : water = 3 : 1 Milk = (3/4) × 40 = 30 L Water = (1/4) × 40 = 10 L Let x litres of water be added. New water quantity = 10 + x Milk remains 30 L Required ratio: 30 : (10 + x) = 3 : 2 So 30 / (10 + x) = 3 / 2 Cross-multiply: 60 = 3(10 + x) 60 = 30 + 3x 3x = 30 → x = 10 Hence,  10 litres of water must be added.
