Question
Quantity of water in a 420 litres mixture (Milk + Water)
is 60 litres less than the quantity of milk in it. Find the quantity of water to be mixed so that the quantity of milk in the mixture becomes 40% of the whole mixture.Solution
Let milk = M, water = W Given: M + W = 420 W = M − 60 So: M + (M − 60) = 420 2M = 480 M = 240 litres W = 180 litres Now add x litres water. New milk = 240 New total = 420 + x Given milk becomes 40% of whole mixture: 240 = 40% of (420 + x) 240 = 0.40(420 + x) 240 = 168 + 0.40x 72 = 0.40x x = 180 litres
