Question
A mixture (acetone and water) contains 30% acetone and
rest 70 litres water. How much acetone should be added to the mixture to make the ratio of acetone to water in the mixture 5:2?Solution
Initial quantity of acetone in the mixture = 70 × (0.30/0.70) = 30 litres
Let the quantity of acetone added be ‘x’ litres
According to the question,
(30 + x)/70 = 5/2
=> x = 175 – 30 = 145
Therefore, quantity of acetone added = 145 litres
