A boat takes 12 hours to cover 96 km while travelling in upstream. If the speed of the stream is 4 km/h, then find the time taken by the boat to cover the same distance in downstream.
Solution
Upstream speed of the boat = 96 ÷ 12 = 8 km/h Downstream speed of the boat = upstream speed + 2 X speed of stream And downstream speed of the boat = 8 + (4 X 2) = 8 + 8 = 16 km/h So, required time = 96 ÷ 16 = 6 hours
