Question
Six years ago, the age of P was twice the age of Q.
After 6 years from now, the age difference between P and Q will be 18 years. Find the present age of P.Solution
Let the present ages of P and Q be x and y years respectively.
x β 6 = 2(y β 6)
x + 6 β (y + 6) = 18
β x β y = 18
From first equation:
x β 6 = 2y β 12
x = 2y β 6
Substitute in second:
2y β 6 β y = 18
y = 24
x = 2(24) β 6 = 42
Present age of P = 42 years
