So, (r – 8) / (a + 8) = 5 / 9 Or, 9r – 72 = 5a + 40 Or, 9r – 5a = 112 ------------------ (1) Also, r + a = 2 × 36 = 72--------------- (2) Equation (2) × 5 + Equation (1), we get 14r = 472 Or, r = 33.71 (approximately 34) So, a = 72 – 34 = 38 Required difference = 38 – 34 = 4 years
