Question

A question is given, followed by two statements numbered (I) and (II). You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements is sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and select the appropriate answer.

Six persons A, B, C, D, E and F stand in a row and face in north direction but not necessarily in the same order. Who sits second to the left of C?

Statements:

(I) F sits immediate right of A. C sits second to the right of A. E sits immediate right of C. B sits immediate left of D. B doesn't sit adjacent to E.

(II) Two persons sit between E and A. A sits third from one of the extreme ends of the row. B sits second to the left of A. F sits to the left of C.

A Data given in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question while data given in statement II is not sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B Data given in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question while data given in statement I is not sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C Either data in statement I or statement II is sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D Data in statements I and II together are sufficient to answer the question. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

Solution

From statement I alone, F sits immediate right of A. C sits second to the right of A. E sits immediate right of C. B sits immediate left of D. B doesn't sit adjacent to E. B         D         A         F          C         E Here, A sits second to the left of C. So, statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question. From statement II alone, two persons sit between E and A. A sits third from one of the extreme ends of the row. B sits second to the left of A. F sits to the left of C. Case 1: When A sits third from the extreme left end. B         D/F      A         F/D/E              C/D     E Case 2: When A sits third from the extreme right end. E         B         D/F      A         F/C/D  C/D Here, we cannot fix the position of C. So, statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question. So, data given in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question while data given in statement II is not sufficient to answer the question .
