Question
A traveler covers a total distance of 600 km using a
scooter and a train. The scooter travels at 40 km/h while the train runs at 120 km/h. If the traveler uses the scooter for 20% of the journey, find the average speed of the entire travel. (Approximate to nearest km/h)Solution
ATQ,
Time by scooter = [(0.20 × 600)/40] = (120/40) = 3 hours
Time by train = [(0.80 × 600)/120] = (480/120) = 4 hours
Average speed = [(Total distance)/(Total time)] = [600/(3 + 4)] = (600/7) ~ 86 km/h
