      Question

A mixture contains 84 litres milk and rest is water.

When 36 litres milk and 24 litres water is added to the mixture, the ratio of milk to water becomes 5 : 3. Find the initial quantity of mixture.
A 120 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 126 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 132 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 138 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E 144 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

Let initial quantity of water be ‘n’ litres. So,
      (84 + 36) : (n + 24) = 5 : 3 Or,
      120 : (n + 24) = 5 : 3 Or,
      n + 24 = 72 Or,
n = 48 Therefore, required quantity of mixture
      = 84 + 48
      = 132 litres
