Question
The ratio of the milk to water in a mixture is 7:3. 40
litres of mixture is taken out and 10 litres of water is added in the remaining mixture. If in the resultant mixture the quantity of milk is double the quantity of water, then find the quantity of water in the initial mixture.Solution
Let the quantity of the milk in the initial mixture = 7x litres
The quantity of the water in the initial mixture = 3x litres
The quantity of the milk in 40 litres of mixture = (40/10) Ă— 7 = 28 litres
The quantity of the water in 40 litres of mixture = (40/10) Ă— 3 = 12 litres
According to the question,
(7x – 28) = 2 × (3x – 12 + 10)
7x – 28 = 2 × (3x – 2)
7x – 28 = 6x – 4
x = 24
The quantity of the water in the initial mixture = 3 Ă— 24 = 72 litres
