Question
A mixture contains alcohol and water in the ratio of 9:4
respectively. If 221 ml of mixture is taken out and 80 ml of water and 25 ml of alcohol is added into the remaining mixture, then quantity of water in the resultant mixture will be 20 ml more than that of alcohol. Find the original quantity of alcohol in the mixture initially.Solution
Let original quantity of alcohol and water in the mixture be 9x ml and 4x ml respectively.
Quantity of alcohol in 221 ml of mixture = 9/13 × 221 = 153 ml
Quantity of water in 221 ml of mixture = 221 – 153 = 68 ml
According o question;
9x – 153 + 25 + 20 = 4x – 68 + 80
or, 5x = 120
so, x = 24
Original quantity of alcohol in the mixture = 9 × 24 = 216 ml
