Balban, who ruled from 1266 to 1286 CE, was the first Delhi Sultan to assume the title of Zil-i-Ilahi, which translates to "Shadow of God" or "Image of God." By adopting this title, Balban emphasized his divine authority and portrayed himself as second only to the Prophet in dignity. This was part of his effort to consolidate his power and strengthen the Sultanate’s central authority.
