He was a poet, literary critic, essayist, teacher, and translator from the United States."Untitled Subjects" earned the Pulitzer Prize in 1970, and "Without Saying" was a National Book Award Finalist in 2008. In 1983, he won the National Book Award (formerly known as the American Book Award) for his translation of Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du Mal."
