NICL AO (Legal) Eligibility criteria
Before applying, Legal Officer candidates must ensure they meet the NICL AO (Legal) eligibility criteria. Applicants must be between 21 and 30 years of age as per the age deadline which will be mentioned in the notification.
Age relaxations apply as follows: SC/ST – 5 years; OBC non-creamy layer – 3 years; Persons with Benchmark Disabilities – 10 years; Ex-servicemen/Commissioned Officers – 5 years; Defence personnel disabled in operations – 3 years; and confirmed employees of public-sector general insurance companies – 8 years .

The final mark sheet and degree certificate must be in hand by 1 May 2025; provisional or awaiting-results certificates are not accepted .

NICL AO Legal Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026
The selection process comprises three stages: the Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and Personal Interview. NICL AO Legal Mains Exam Pattern
Main Examination will consist of Objective Tests (Multiple Choice type Questions) for 250 marks and Descriptive Test for 30 Marks. Both the Objective and Descriptive Tests will be online.
(i) Objective Test: The Objective Test of 3 Hours duration consists of six sections for Legal officer, for total 250 Marks. The sixth section is an additional test to assess technical & professional knowledge in the Legal discipline :

(ii) Descriptive Test: The descriptive Test of 30 Minutes duration with 30 marks will be a Test of English Language. The descriptive test will be in English and will be conducted through on-line mode.
(Essay – 10 Marks, Précis – 10 & Comprehension – 10 marks).
Candidates will have to answer the Descriptive Test by typing on the computer. Immediately after completion of the Objective Test, Descriptive Test will be administered.

NICL AO Legal Officer Final Selection
Final selection for the NICL AO (Legal) stream is based on the consolidated scores of the Main Examination (Objective Test) and the Personal Interview, with an 80:20 weightage respectively . Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in the Objective Test to have their Descriptive Test evaluated and then meet the cut-off for interview shortlisting.

Selected candidates must also fulfill the four-year service bond requirement, including probation, as per NICL’s service regulations.
NICL AO (Legal) Important Dates 2026

The starting basic salary for a NICL Legal Officer is ₹50,925 per month. In major cities, once you add dearness allowance, house rent allowance, and other allowances, the total monthly pay comes to around ₹85,000.
