Question
What is the minor subject of the person born in
March? In a certain programme, students have to choose a major subject (among the five given below) and one or two minor subjects in accordance with the major chosen. The programme has 4 semesters. A person in 1st semester is junior to the persons in the other semesters and so on. The conditions for choosing minor subject are: (i) If the major subject is History, the minor subject cannot be General Awareness or Hindi. (ii) If the major subject is Science, the minor subject can be any one subject. (iii) If the major subject is English, the minor subject has to be Hindi. (iv) If the major subject is hindi, the minor subjects have to be Biology and any other subject except Science. (v) If the major subject is Biology, the minor subjects have to be English and History. The major and minor subjects for one student cannot be the same. The subjects mentioned above are the only subjects taught in the programme each subject must be used at least once as a major subject. If a student is in 2nd semester, his minor subject has to be General awareness (with or without another minor according to his major). If a student is in 3rd semester, his minor subject cannot be Biology or Science. Seven friends who were born in seven consecutive months of the same year are in different semesters of the programme. A was born in September and has Hindi major. Three persons were born in between B and L. B was born before L but B is junior to L. Only the youngest person is in 4th semester and two persons each are in the other semesters. Both the friends in 3rd semester have History major. J was born in the immediate month before K. J is senior to K but not immediately. Both the oldest friends are in 2nd semester but have different majors. C has Biology as major subject and is junior to A. C was born after A. L was born before March but after J. The one born in October has the same major subject as M. M is younger than A. K has English as major subject and was born after December.Solution
A was born in September and has Hindi major. So, either A is the oldest or the oldest person was born in January. If a student is in 2nd semester, his minor has to be Commerce. According to condition (iv), A has Commerce and Biology as his minors. Case 1: The oldest was born in January. Only the youngest person is in 4th semester and two persons each are in the other semesters. Both the oldest friends are in 2nd semester but have different majors. J was born in the immediate month before K. L was born after J. J is senior to K but not immediately. So, K must be in 1st semester and J in 3rd semester. So, J's major and minor will be History and English just like L. K has English major.
But K was born after December. So, case 1(I) is invalid. B was born in October.
C has Biology major and is junior to A. C was born after A. So, C must be in 1st semester.
C has Biology major and is junior to A. C was born after A. So, C is in 1st semester and M in 4th. According to condition (I), we get C's minors as: So, L is in 3rd semester.
Now from the conditions, only students having major Science or Hindi can have Commerce minor. As the 2nd semester students have different majors, so B must have Science as major. The one born in October has the same major as M.
